Song Analysis Apologize- One Republic
Apologize by One Republic is a piano rock. People love this song because it relates to numerous people. Its slow melody and its lyrics describe the relationship between a guy and his lover that didn’t work out well.
Verse 1=
I’m holding on your rope,
got me ten feet off the ground
I’m hearing what you say but I just can’t make a sound
You tell me that you need me
Then you go and cut me down, but wait
You tell me that you’re sorry
Didn’t think I’d turn around, and say
Analysis: The rope symbolizes his eagerness to be with her and to make her happy. She pulls him up and he climbs up very high into the relationship, risking everything to devote his whole heart towards her. Unfortunately she plays with his mind, gives him mixed messages and false hope then cuts him off. However, soon she regrets cutting him off and apologizes, expecting him to forgive her and accept her, but he says…
Chorus:
It’s too late to apologize, it’s too late
I said it’s too late to apologize, it’s too late
- self explanatory -
Verse 2:
I’d take another chance, take a fall
take a shot for you
And I need you like a hear needs a beat
But it’s nothing new
Now it’s turning blue, and you say…
“Sorry” like the angel heaven let me think was you
But I’m afraid…
It’s too late to apologize, it’s too late
I said It’s too late to apologize, it’s too late
It’s too late to apologize, it’s too late
I said it’s too late to apologize, it’s too late
It’s too late to apologize, yeah
I said it’s too late to apolobize, yeah-
I’m holding on your rope, got me ten feet off the ground…
Analysis: It was too late for her to realize how precious person she lost. “I’m holding on your rope, got me ten feet off the ground” means that he reminisces their love.
Canada
I am currently living in canada, and I am here to point out some misunderstanding and prejudice that people have against people in Canada. Canada is 2nd largest country in our word. United Nations ranked Canada the best place to live in 1990. I don’t live in an igloo and I dont ride on a polar bear to go to school. Also I don’t own a dogsled. We dont have to buy our drinking water from other countries. In fact, we don’t even have to buy a water from the store. I speak both English, and French, but not American.
Canada is not part of america. We have Prime Minister, not a president. We produce one of the finest maple syrup in our world. We say “zed” not “zee”. Canadians believe in peacekeeping and diversity, not hatred. We have everything we need in Canada even the space program. We invented our own Robot called Canadarm, which are attatched to numerous space station.
5 inches of snow will never stop us, while 2 inch of snow in New York City will stop the whole city. Air so fresh, water so clean, and lastly, people are so kind. People believe that America is the land of oppertunity, where you will be able to get a better education and better job. However, Canada also have good universities, and have numerous and endless job oppertunities.
Canada, the land of multiculturalism, oppertunity, and happiness. This is the place where I am living, and this is the place where I am happy and proud to intruduce to other people.
Rock v.s. Rap
There is a group on Facebook called “ROCK vs. RAP – The count to one million” and you join either Rock group or Rap group. One friend of mine introduced me about this group. He was on Rap side. However, personally, I believe that Rock is much better than Rap. My friend and I had a huge discussion about which type of music is better than the other one. Here are some of the reasons why he love rap:
-Rappers are able to utilize rhymes. Therefore, they are poets.
-All the lyrics of the rap music talks about their life.
-Unlike Rockers, They don’t just yell and strum random loud notes on a guitar
-You can dance to raps. However, you can’t dance to rock.
After he stated these reasons, I also stated some reasons why I prefer Rock. However, before stating my reason, I made few objections to his reasons:
-Not only rappers put rhymes in their song. Various type of music use some rhymes in their song.
-Story behind most of the rock tells the listener about artists their life, opinion about the world, and various stories
-Rockers don’t just yell out random words and strum random notes on guitar. Maybe hardcore rock does, but most of the rockers dont. For example, one of the indie rock band called “The Arctic Monkeys” wrote some fast music, loud music, slow music, and soft music.
-Who says that people can’t dance to rock? You dance to a music through your heart, not through a dance book, where it tells you how to dance. Also numerous people dance do rock even myself ![]()
-Rock is harder to perform, since the performer has to sing and play an instrument at the same time.
I believe that everyone is able to make rap. However, one thing special about rock is that the artist must have rhythmic mind and thinking in order to write a song.
Randy Pausch. “The Last Lecture, Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams”
Randy Pausch is a professor of Carnegie Mellon Computer Science. He is also interested in virtual reality, where you make a world in a cyberworld. For example, he is the inventor of 3D animation software called Allice. Currently, he is 47 years old father with 3 kids. They are 2, 3, and 6 year olds. However, Randy Pausch has Terminal Pancreatic Cancer and was told in August 2007 to expect to have only remaining three to six months of good health. Then he was given to do a last lecture before he die. September 18 2007, hundreds of people came all the way to CMU to be part of his last lecture. With a welcoming standing ovation in the beginning of the lecture, he did his inspirational last lecture infront his students, his family, and his friends.
He began his lecture by saying “when there is an elephant in the room, introduce them” and he showed his CAT scans about his tumors. Also he said he apologize to people who thought that the lecture was gonna be gloomy one. In order to prove that he is healthy other than tumors inside his body, he also showed some clapping pushups. His “Last Lecture” was full of humour that I began to forget that he is suffering with cancer.
The lecture was not about his cancer. It was more about telling people to achieve their childhood dreams. He mentioned some of the childhood dreams that he had. Here are some of his childhood dreams.
-Being in zero gravity
-Playing National Football League
-Authoring an article in the World Book of Encyclopedia
-Being Captain Kirk
-Being an imagineer with Disney
-Winning a stuffed animals from amusement park.
In fact, he achieved all of his childhood dreams.
Here is some of the stuff he mentioned on his last lecture.
“The brick walls are
there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us
a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the
people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”
“It’s not about how to achieve your
dreams. It’s about how to lead your life. If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care
of itself. The dreams will come to you.”
“These slides (he showed some slides) are a little bit dark, but when I was in high school I
decided to paint my bedroom. [shows slides of bedroom] I always wanted a submarine and an
elevator. And the great thing about this is they let me do it. And
they didn’t get upset about it. And it’s still there. If you go to my parent’s house it’s still there. And anybody who is out there who is a parent, if your kids want to paint their bedroom, as a favor to me
let them do it. It’ll be OK. Don’t worry about resale value on the house.” Painting a room is to spread out children’s imagination”
Also before he ended his speech, he said that the speech is not for the people who was watching the lecture, but it was for his 3 kids, where they will see this lecture when they grow up.
I have my own childhood dream. I wanted to become a Taxi driver, wanted to live in a deserted island and try to survive by myself, wanted to participate in marathon, and I wanted to become an airline pilot. I thought I was never gonna achieve my own childhood dream. However, after this inspirational speech, I decided to do my best to achieve my childhood dream before I die.
