Guitar Hero vs. Guitar.

June 29, 2008 at 7:12 am (Uncategorized)

When I was young, I never thought of myself playing a guitar, although I thought that it would be cool to play a guitar. Playing a guitar was one of my childhood dream. I used to play air guitar while I was listening to rock music. However, as I turned to grade 8, I began to play the real guitar. I just realized that I pursued one of my childhood dreams. I used to play cello, and this helped me alot when I started guitar. Playing a guitar was extremely easy for me.

I didn’t know such thing called “Guitar Hero” existed untill my friend introduced it to me. Guitar Hero is a game that can be played on Xbox 360, Playstation 2/3, and Nintendo Wii. Guitar Hero is basically to used to simulate the playing of music, by following represented on screen by colored notes that indicates what fret button to press on the controller. People say that this game makes the player feel like they are playing the real guitar. However, for me, it was way too difficult. I was struggling so much.

For some reason, this game is extremely famous and popular among my friends. In fact, everyone is so good at it. Usually, people who are amazing at guitar hero can’t play the real guitar, and people who play the real guitar can’t play guitar hero well. However, I strongly believe that in the future, there will be more realistic instrumental game that will help us practice for the real instrument and will give us a huge positive advantage.

Intelligence of crows.

June 28, 2008 at 6:46 pm (Uncategorized)

There are organisms that are able to adapt to the new environment extremely quickly. Some of these organisms are rats and cockroaches are Synanthropic species. Usually, people are annoyed by these species, because they usually ruin peoples houses. However, Joshua Klein, who is a Hacker and writer, found a way to use the intelligence of these Synanthropic species to benefit human beings.

Crows are very intelligent animals. They are able to adapt to new environment extremely quickly. Klein made various experiments. In his first experiment, he put a narrow tube with a food inside of it. Also he put long wire next to this tube. Then, he observed if crows are able to get the food using the wire to get it out. First, the crow was having difficulties getting the food out using the wire, since it was bending too quickly. However, soon something unimaginable thing happened. The crow bent the wire so that it can use the wire as a hook. The crow managed to get the food out.

Another experiment that Klein made was using peanut vending machine. He made a vending machine that always had peanuts out on a tray. Crows loved this vending machine because it provided them infinite amount of food supply. However, Klein then modified this vending machine so that the crows can only get peanuts when they press a lever down. Surprisingly, crows quickly adapted to this new change. Klein then changed the machine so that you can only get a peanut when you put any coins in. Surprisingly, crows also adapted to this situation.

Klein proved to us that crows are extremely intelligent and they are able to think. If we are to train this species just like what we do to our dogs, it will be a huge advantage for us. For example, if we train them to pick up any garbage for them to get a reward (peanut), we will be able to make our environment cleaner. I strongly believe that using this intelligent crow will on day become a huge benefit to human beings.

Bill Gates Retirement.

June 28, 2008 at 8:52 am (Uncategorized)

I feel deeply honoured and lucky to be living in a period of time where I am able to experience the foundation of Microsoft, which is one of the biggest OS maker in our history. Not only I get to experience the foundation of Microsoft Windows, I am also honoured that I am able to be in a time where the founder of this brilliant company retires. This person is not just a regular person who will be erased from our head. This is a historic person who will always be remembered and will be written in a schools text book in the future. This person is Bill Gates.

Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allan. Who would have known that this small company founded by young people, will grow up to be one of the biggest companies in our world? This was possible either because of the help of God, or Bill Gates ingenious thinking.

Bill Gates used to be the richest person in our entire world. Not only he was rich, but with his money, he worked hard on Bill & Melinda Foundation, which is the largest charitable foundation in our world. I believe that God helped Bill Gates to be rich because God knew that Bill will do a lot of positive changes to our world. Bill Gates will always be remembered even in the future. When people are studying about 21st century in the future, they will think of us as one of the greatest thinker of the whole human race, since we lived in the foundation of computers.

Steve Jobs Stanford Commencement.

June 25, 2008 at 6:00 pm (Uncategorized)

Steve Jobs, who is the president of one of the greatest companies in the history, made a mind-grabbing speech at Stanford University. In his speech, there were numerous facts about him that really was astounding. He was a college drop out. He used to go to the Reed College but he went there only for 6 months. However, he had to drop out of the college because he was using all of his parent’s valuable money. That is why he dropped out of the college, believing in himself. However, he still dropped in to some classes that he thought was interesting. His daily life was not that pleasant. He had to stay in his friend’s room and collected every cents he earned by returning the recycled bottles.

When he turned 20, He founded the Apple Company with Steve Woz. After 10 years, this company grew up to be one of the biggest companies in our world. However, when he turned 30, he was fired by his own company he founded. The reason is he hired someone who he trusted, but his opinion was against Steve. Broad of Director was on his side. This event was devastating to Steve.

After he was fired, he founded Next and Pixar company. There, me met his wife, and with Pixar company, he worked hard to create the first animated film “toys story”. Apple then realized the importance of Steve Jobs and Apple decided to buy Pixar and Next and Steve Jobs returned to Apple.

Steve Jobs then told the audience that we must live everyday as if it was our last. That way, we will live more unique life and will face something special everyday. We must not waste our life and time. We must pursue our happiness, find what we like to do, and find what we love.

Money can buy happiness.

June 24, 2008 at 10:37 pm (Uncategorized)

Who says that money can’t buy happiness? According to HBS professor Michael Norton Elizabeth Dunn and Lara Aknin from UBC, we are able to get happiness by even donating $5 to the charity or to give it to someone who needs it.

We get happier if we donate the money to other person than to spend it by ourselves. According to their research, if someone makes $100,000 a year gets a promotion and now makes $110,000,  he wont pursue happiness by spending that 10,000. However if he donates that extra money to other person, he will get a huge fulfillment. Also the research says that we can’t buy happiness. However if we use our money in a right way, we will be able to be happier.

I strongly agree to this statement. As a teenager who goes to a school, I experience alot of “money giving” situations. For example, in cafeteria, there are some people who forgot to bring their lunch money. Some people fake that they forgot to bring their lunch money, to get/steal money from others. However, there are some people who looks desperate of lunch money. People usually dont let them borrow their money. However, I always lend them my money. Usually the day after, they wants to pay me back in double the amount. That is when I feel very greatful about what I did. Some forgets to pay me back, but when I forget my lunch money, they are the first person who offer me their lunch money.

Antipreneurs

June 24, 2008 at 9:25 pm (Uncategorized)

Antipreneurs are people who are anti- advertisements and anti-big business. Antipreneurs frequently depened on each other to get their supplies because they share similar ideas. Usually, Antipreneurs hate logos. They react to how big business is affecting the environment and how they treat their customers. Also they care about how big companies are treating the world.

Bill Goldsmith opened an internet radio station. (www.radioparadise.com) Internet was extremely popular in 2000. Goldsmith thought that starting his own radiostation without ads would be extraordinary. Infact, his radio station is ran without any advertisements and is run by donations from the listeners. He receives over $1 million in annual revenues.

Another Antipreneur is a person named Kalle Lasn. In order to protest against Nike’s illegal labour in china, he founded “Blackspot shoes” since 2003. He designed a shoes with white circle on the part where Nike Logo will be located. This company is formed with 13 people and sold 30,000 shoes.

I believe that the idea of Antipreneurs is outrageously incomprehensible. One of their idea mentions that they are against the advertisements. However, Antipreneurs made some advertisements themselves. They spread their idea through articles. Also Antipreneurs mentioned that they hate logos that represent big-businesses like Nike. However, their idea of No logo is still a logo. And their idea will be recognized as “Antipreneurs.”

Three “E”s

June 24, 2008 at 7:36 am (Uncategorized)

When I was living in Korea, I did not know how much the air was polluted. However in grade 5, I came to Canada and I realized how much Korea is polluted. As soon as I set a foot in Canada, I saw a clear blue sky up above and fresh scent that welcomed me. Grass was extraordinarily green and sun was warm. I knew that I haven’t felt those feeling in Korea for years. In Korea, you can hardly see bright blue sky. It is covered with clouds formed with fumes, auto exhaust pollutants, and carbon dioxides. The visibility of the atmosphere is atrocious. I believe that the reason why Korea’s atmosphere is horrible is mostly because of the auto exhaust. Due to the high concentration of population, car exhausts are persistently ruining our environment. There are numerous public transportations available for Korean citizens. However, people use their vehicle. There are some automobiles that will produce less co2 gas, and also there are some vehicles that only use renewable energy. However, people are not interested on taking their time to purchase environment friendly vehicles. This caused the gas price to rise outrageously. This commenced the search for new renewable energy.

Three Es stands for (energy, ecosystem, environment). I made this up but basically, what it means is that in 21st century, we are constantly looking for more efficient and renewable energy, we try to protect our ecosystem, and we try to save our environment. There are numerous renewable energies: Geothermal, solar, wind, biomass, nuclear, etc. However, there are only three 100% nature friendly energies. They are solar, wind, and wave energy. Other renewable energies are nature friendly energies. However, in order to operate them, you need to burn something to create a heat. Burning a material to create energy won’t affect our environment for now. However, burning something will eventually contribute to the global warming. Now, scientists are trying to find 100% nature friendly energies.

Every step we take creates 3-5 watts of energy. There is a technology called “Pacesetter”, which is a floor that saves electricity that we make by walking on this device. If we install Pacesetter in a subway, we are able to create 102000-170000 watts during the rush hour. There are millions of small elements we do that create small amount of electricity. If we use all of these technologies in real life, we will make huge amount of energies that will give us a huge benefit from acquiring the energy, protecting our ecosystem, and saving our environment.

MIT Wireless Power Technology

June 24, 2008 at 4:25 am (Uncategorized)

My Desk is extremely ugly with all tangled wires going around everywhere. Wires that goes into my laptop, wires that goes into my lamp, and there are millions of wires that are powering all of my appliances that i use in daily life. To reduce some of my wires, I bought a wireless mouse. However this wireless mouse only transmit bluetooth signals, not the actual electricity. The mouse itself is powered by battery. Now there is a solution to all of these. I always wanted wireless power supply that will transfer electricity from one place to another wirelessly. However everyone told me that it is impossible. I always thought that possiblility seems endless as we reached 21 century. Us human beings made millions of great inventions. Here are list of greatest inventions that I think. Wireless internet, renewable energys, and battery. However, I strongly believe that this new “Wireless Power Technology” will fit into my “greatest invention” category.

I realized that every inventions that has to do something with electricity requires a coil, and this technology also requires coils. One is a sender of the electricity, and the other one is a receiver. The sender’s coil is connected to the power source, while the receiver is attatched to a device that needs electricity. The sender’s coil use electricity in a magnetic force field. Receiver pick up this trainsmission and use this as an electricity. This is the way they transfer enectricity wirelessly.

Using this technology will change our lifestyle. If we have wireless power transmitter everywhere, We will no longer have to go to gas station to fill up our gas, since your car will constantly provided with wireless electricity. We wont need any wires for any of our devices or even a battery, since electricity will be provided. In military, airplanes wont need to worry about returning to the base to fill up gas, since they can just charge energy wirelessly.

Zipit

June 20, 2008 at 8:29 am (New Technology, Product Review)

There are numerous households that struggle and dispute over who is using the computer in 21st century. Parents need computer for their business or other document work. However, teenagers use computer to be part of social networking or live messanger service. Parents could buy their kids a laptop, however it is not affordable. For these situation, product like Zipit is useful.

Zipit is a gadget that allows user to log into AIM, MSN, or Yahoo messanger service account and use live messaging service. It has Wi-fi technology so user is able to connect to the web through wireless internet service or hotspot. Through Zipit, people can listen to music, watch movie, and even listen to internet radio. Surprisingly, Zipit has Linux Technology inside. There is a rumor going on that hackers are looking forward to hack this device just like they did to i-touch.

Personally, I like Zipit idea. Its price is also understandable and its ability is modernaged. However, there are some downside of this gadget. Keyboard of this device is way too small and flicking through multiple conversation will be hard using this small device. Before people buy this device, they should first think about if Zipit is actually better than the PDA or cellphones they are using. I would recommand parents to buy laptops for their children than buying this gadget. This gadget will only distract kids from their daily life.

Pursuit of Happiness

June 17, 2008 at 6:29 am (Uncategorized)

Playing Video games, watching a movie, or going on a rollercoaster is pleasurable. However as I lived for 14 years, I realized that there are specific 10 seconds moment in my life that I enjoy. Sometimes I go through that moment really fast without actually feeling the pleasure. However, now I realized that if I really enjoy that moment, thinking about it, I am able to pursuit the happiness. Here are some 10 seconds moment that I enjoy. The moment that I step inside the airplane, The moment that press the number on a vending machine to get a chocolate, The moment I step on the stage for any performance, and lastly, the moment that I step inside my house.

In my head, as I step one foot inside the airplane, I think of hundreds of happy thoughts. I think about the happiness that I get by watching the movie in the airplane, I think about all the food and beverages. Then I think about the destination with all of its tourist sights. All of those thoughts quickly swims through my head just as I step a foot inside the airplane and that is a wonderful happiness that I receive.

When I see the vending machine, my hand automatically reach inside my pocket, trying to find any change inside my pocket. Then if I find any change, I quickly put it in the vending machine, without hesitation. Then after I load enough money in the vending machine enough to buy the most expensive chocolate bar of the whole choice, I go through the list of chocolate bars and chips. That moment is one of my 10 second pleasurable split seconds. I feel like I have the control of the vending machine and I have the power to choose anything I want. As I am going through the list, I think about each chocolate bars taste, texture, and its temperature in my head. That feeling is just stunning.

I dont get why people are afraid of the stage when they are performing. For me, I am not afraid of the stage, in fact, I enjoy being on stage where everyone is looking at me. One of my 10 second moment is the time when I am on stage, looking at the audience. I love that moment. I feel like I am the king of the whole audience because people will react with what I say and what I do. Audiences wont go anywhere, in fact, they will listen to me no matter what. That stage is opened just for me.

The best 10 second moment of my entire life is by the time I step inside my house. I feel like I am welcomed and I am freed. Home is kind of a thing that is hard to explain. People say that the best part of the world is your home, and I highly respect that. Home is where you sleep, where you change your clothes, where you take a shower, where you watch TV, and where you make your own personal history. That is why when I step inside my home, smelling my homes own pleasant scent, I feel very welcomed.

You dont only get happiness for actually doing entertainments. You get happiness in everyday life. For example, I get happiness from choosing my chocolate bar from vending machine, walking into the airplane or my house, or when I step on stage. Just like the movie click, if you fast forward every detail of your life, you wont get those happiness from those split seconds that you experience as you life. In fact, after you fast forward those moment, you will realize how valuable those split seconds are.
