Making Omaha Beach World War II scene with 3 people?

July 12, 2008 at 2:53 am (Uncategorized)

We all know what happened in Omaha Beach during the World War II. We know what happened through pictures, history books, and even movies. When I think of Omaha Beach, I think of bombs exploding everywhere, people dying, machineguns shooting from everywhere, and devastating scene. In the movie “Saving Private Ryan”, there is a scene where Allied soldiers land on the devastating Omaha Beach. In order to film this scene, they had to use thousands of people dressed up as a soldier.

The way they filmed the Omaha Beach scene on “Saving Private Ryan” is 1998 20th centurys way. Now, in 21st century with modern technology, we are capable of filming this scene with only 3 people!. Richard Hammond proved that it is possible to film this scene with 3 people with 3 graphic designers, 1 car, some equipments, and his camera.

The way he made this possible required alot of work. First, he divided the beach into layers. He would film 3 soldiers running in that layer and then move on to different layers. Then he would combine those layers and make it into one. “Cliff climbing scene” required “green screen”. he filmed the scene where soldiers are climbing the cliff with green screen on the background. After he filmed everything, he edited the film with graphics. After he finished editing, the outcome was fantastic. It looked just like “Saving Private Ryan”’s Omaha Beach.

Benjamin Zander

Benjamin Zander has is a conductor of the Boston Philharmonic. Since 1979, Benjamin Zander has been the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic. Also he is a professor of New England Conservatory. Believe it or not, he is known around the world as both inspiring conductor and a mind-stirring guest speaker. This amazing conductor and speaker became a guest speaker TED lately.

He started his speech by telling a short story about 2 people who were the shoes salesmen in Africa. When went to Africa, they sent a telegram to Britian about the situation. One person said that the situation is horrible cause no one wears any shoes. However, the other person said that the situation is amazing because everyone will soon wear their company’s shoes. (How humerous! :P )

During his speech, he played a beautiful piece from Chopin (Prelude). Before he played this piece he asked people to think a person who they loved dearly. This really was a mind stirring piece. The way he played was really inspiring. I never knew that Chopin’s Prelude was so beautiful.

Before he ended his speech, he shared a story about one of his friends. It was a story about a woman who was on her way to the concentration camp with his brother. However, she was scolding his brother because he lost one of his shoes. However, this was the last thing she said to his brother. The woman lived. However she promised to herself that she will not say anything to other person that she wont say in their last conversation.

Guy Kawasaki

Guy Kawasaki was one of the original Macintosh employees, who was responsible for marketing the Macintosh. He made a speech at TiECon entitled “The Art of the Start.” His speech was unique. It was full of humore and also It really meant alot to me.

In his speech, he mad 11 points:

1. Make meaning

2. Make Mantra

3. Get going

4. Define a Business model

5. Weave a MAT (milestones, assumptions, tasts)

6. Niche thyself

7. Follow the 10/20/30 rule

8. Hire infected people

9. Lower the barriers to adoption

10. Seed the clouds

11. Don’t let the bozos grind you down.

Among those, what really stirred my thinking is “7. Follow the 10/20/30 rule.” It means to use 10 slides in 20 minutes with 30 point Font. I always expanded my presentation and used very small font and read everything on the powerpoint. However, Guy Kawasaki said that reading the powerpoint word for word will be a horrible presentation. Another one is “11.Dont let the bozos grind you down” he was once offered to be a CEO of Yahoo. However, since yahoo was a hour drive from his house, he did not accept this offer. If he did, he would have been a billionaire.

I also let bozos grind me down. I made numerous bad decisions that I regretted. However, I realized that there has been numerous bozos in my life. Since there are numerous bozos in my life, even though they grind me down, I should move on from that bad memory and try to “3. Get going”

Human’s Paradoxical attitude.

July 4, 2008 at 3:43 am (Uncategorized)

I always take a good care of my privacy. I keep my computer secured with password, I keep my money in a secure place, and also I keep all of my secrets to myself, not telling anyone even to my family. However, when it comes to Facebook, or even my own blog site, I sometimes let out my secret to the world. This is what the researcher calls Paradoxical attitude

Researchers made a survey to 2 group of people, asking them if they ever copied or plagiarized. For the first group, the researcher made a point clearly that their privacy will be protected. However, for group B, researchers didn’t say anything. Even though group A was told that their privacy will be kept secret, 25% people said that they cheated, while over 50% of group B said they cheated.

I believe that the reason why less people in group A said they cheated is because they were reminded about the privacy issue. In group B however, was not reminded of any privacy issue. In fact, I think some of them did not even consider about the privacy issue. This is why more people told the truth in Group B

There are numerous other experiments to study about how other people think. If I were to make a science fair experiment on this topic, I would love to make an experiment that has to do with psychology
