Eagle
When things we love and care, vanishes before our eyes, what do we do? What do we do when we choke on agonizing fear and shattering shock, rushes into your mind? All we can do is fly. Fly far away with drying of our tears, trying to forget about everything.
Puddle of blood filled my nest. In front of me, there are my 2 angels with shotgun bullets in both of their body, now turning cold, murdered unbearably and excruciatingly. Now, I am flying. I am flying because I am not ready to face the truth, to face the devastation of loss, and to overcome my fear. I am now living in the forest of darkness, where nothing means to me.
Now I am on my own, flying in the horizon, feeling the wind striking my wing softly. Thinking about my 2 little babies, tears are running down my beak. All of my friends are dead too. They were all killed by cold blooded hunter’s gun. Now I am alone, flying the bright yellow sky, trying to cheer myself from the feeling of loneliness and emptiness. When I look around the sky, I see pigeons, crows, and even sparrows. However, I do not see any eagles.
I am a bald eagle. I am one of the minorities, who survived the extinction. Hunters are everywhere trying to shoot us down. Some people shoot us down for fun, and some people kill us to hang our body on their wall. We have emotions, understand human language, and we are all able to communicate with other eagles. Humans do not think that eagles are able to understand their language. However, we can understand what they say clearly. We never learned how to speak human language, but for some reason, it is in our blood that we are able to understand human.
Humans are my worst enemy. They killed my family and my friends. They shattered and tore my heart into million pieces. Now I can never find those missing heart of mine. My mom used to tell me that when I cannot defeat my enemy, I have to study them first. Now, I promised myself to spend rest of my life studying humans. I wanted to study my worst enemies to understand their life, and to avenge my babies’ death.
Humans are brutal life forms. If our planet were to be an organism, humans are the plagues that are destroying everything in their path. They learned how to demolish themselves. They are constantly using all the non-renewable resources, burning fossil fuels, cutting down trees, and making new lethal weapons. I heard from some humans that we have enough nuclear warheads to blow up our planet 6 times! Humans can never get enough out of anything. They want more money, more power, and more luxuries. They want to be better than other humans and they want to be the best. Their minds are full of greed. It seems to me that they are constantly seeking for new ways to destroy our world.
I have lost faith on most of the humans in our world. However, I see something different and unique on some people. What I see on some people is “hope” I found out that there is a bit of Love and conscience in every human’s heart. There are some people who help the people without getting paid. Some even sacrifice themselves to devote their life into helping other people. There are people who do their best to sustain our environment! Their Generosity is the reason why both human world and nature world is still functioning.
As an Eagle, there are things that I do not get about humans. First thing that I do not get about humans is, they use this transportation device called “car”. I found out that people use this device when they want to travel from place to place quickly. I do not get the point of this device. As an eagle, I enjoy traveling the place to place. Sometimes, I feel too lazy to fly around. However, I began to enjoy every moment while I am flying. I enjoy the feeling that I get when the wind touches my feather, I enjoy the warmth from the sun, and I enjoy every second by observing the panorama. Humans on the other hand, do not seem to enjoy the feeling they get while they are moving from place to place. All they care about is the time and energy. They do not seem to enjoy walking from place to place. Second thing that I don’t get about humans is love. If you are an eagle, when you like another eagle, you tell that eagle that you love her. You never hide your emotion. One thing that I feel pity about human world is, they seem to hide their emotions. I heard this poem from somebody in the street. “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old is time still a-flying; and this same flower that smiles today, to-morrow will be dying.” This is part of a poem called To the Virgins to Make Much of Time by Robert Herrick. This means take your lover’s heart while you can, since tomorrow, will always be different, and make your life different and extraordinary. Or in Latin term, “Carpe Diem” seize the day. If you have a secret crush, go ahead. Ask them out and tell them you love them before it is too late.
I don’t think that humans realize that they are not the only species who are living in our planet. They should begin to realize how other species are suffering because of the humans. When I was younger, humans and eagles were together. We helped humans hunt, and humans gave us food. This is what I called “home”. However, now, we are far away from home. Humans are now hunting down eagles, and eagles are now flying away from humans. Now, we have to go back the long way home and try to fix our world together.
Who knows? Maybe, I am the last bald eagle in our earth. If I die, people will begin to miss us. They will miss the sound of the eagle’s cry. They will miss our ferocious eyes. They will miss the beauty that we gave to our nature. However, the tragedy of our society is that humans will only feel the guilt once the traces that we leave in our world disappear.
